Ronaldo starts for Portugal against Ubzbekistan at World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo was selected to start for Portugal in their second World Cup group match against Uzbekistan on Tuesday, even though his performance in the previous game was described as insipid.

The 41‑year‑old captain remained largely anonymous as Roberto Martinez’s side drew 1‑1 with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He recorded only 25 touches, the fewest he has had in a full match at a major tournament for Portugal.

His performance prompted some observers to call for Martinez to drop the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus striker.

However, Martinez has stayed defiant, keeping Ronaldo in the starting XI despite the player not scoring in ten major‑tournament matches.

Ronaldo received a rapturous reception when he came out to warm up at Houston Stadium, and again each time he appeared on the big screen.

Martinez also selected Ronaldo’s Al Nassr teammate João Félix to replace Bernardo Silva, while Manchester City defender Ruben Dias also started.
