The House of Representatives expressed deep sorrow following the death of Rep. Yaya Bauchi Tongo, who had represented the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State.

In a statement released on Friday by House spokesman Rep. Akintunde Rotimi, the Green Chamber described the late lawmaker’s passing as a painful loss for the National Assembly, Gombe State, and the nation.

The statement noted that Tongo died in Abuja after a brief illness, a fact confirmed by the Gombe State Caucus in the House.

House officials said the former legislator had devoted his life to public service and the advancement of his constituents and the country.

“His passing marks the end of a distinguished life devoted to public service and the advancement of his constituents, Gombe State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement read.

Lawmakers highlighted Tongo’s extensive record of public service, which included roles as Chairman of Funakaye Local Government Area, Special Adviser to the Gombe State Government, and member of the Gombe State House of Assembly before his election to the House of Representatives.

Until his death, he also served as Chairman of the Nigeria–United Arab Emirates Parliamentary Friendship Group in the House.

The statement described him as a seasoned grassroots politician, dedicated legislator, and respected parliamentarian whose contributions enriched legislative debates and governance.

“A respected voice within the Parliament and a passionate advocate for the welfare and development of his constituents, Hon. Tongo brought wisdom, experience and a deep understanding of governance to legislative deliberations,” it added.

On behalf of Speaker Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, House leadership and members, Rotimi extended condolences to Tongo’s family, the people of Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency, and the government and citizens of Gombe State.

The House prayed for the repose of his soul and asked God to grant his family, constituents and colleagues the strength to endure the loss.

It added that details of parliamentary tributes and funeral arrangements would be announced later.
