The Ondo State Police Command has rejected the alleged claims made by a cleric regarding impending bandit attacks in the state.
While urging residents to remain patient and calm, the command announced that investigations into the claims have begun.
Clergyman Michael Olowookere circulated a viral video on social media warning that terror attacks would occur in Akure, the state capital, as well as in Akoko and Owo between Wednesday and Friday of this week.
According to the cleric, the potential attacks would target churches, security outposts, and large religious gatherings.
In a statement from the command’s spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, the claims were described as unverified and lacking intelligence support from state security agencies.
Jimoh also reported that security operatives have been deployed more heavily across the state to prevent any security breaches.
“The Ondo State Police Command has observed with concern a viral video currently circulating across social media platforms in which a cleric allegedly warned of impending attacks in some parts of Ondo State,” the statement read.
“Following the emergence of the video, the Ondo State Police Command immediately activated its intelligence and operational assets to critically assess the credibility of the claims and determine whether there exists any actual threat to public safety.”
“Nevertheless, the police, in collaboration with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders, remain on high alert and fully committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents,” the statement concluded.
