On May 29, 2026, at about 4:00 a.m., operatives from the State Anti‑Kidnapping Unit (SAKU) carried out an intelligence‑led stop‑and‑search along the Onitsha‑Benin Expressway. They stopped an ash‑coloured Mercedes‑Benz station wagon registered BEN 982 TE, which was occupied by Hilary Aloma and Oki Joseph, alias “Big Joe.” A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered ten bags containing substances suspected to be Indian hemp, which had been concealed inside.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspected drugs were being transported from Edo State to Awka, Anambra State, before the suspects were intercepted.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Bright Edafe confirmed the arrests, noting that the suspects were taken into custody immediately and the seized items were secured as evidence. He added that investigations are continuing to determine the full scope of the criminal network and to identify additional accomplices involved in the illicit trade.
Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, praised the operatives for their vigilance, professionalism, and commitment to duty. He warned that individuals engaged in unlawful possession of firearms, drug trafficking, cult‑related activities, or other criminal conduct would face the full force of the law.
