Paraguay won 1‑0 over Turkey on Friday, a result that kept their World Cup campaign alive and confirmed that the United States will finish top of Group D. Turkey’s loss also means they are the second team after Haiti to be knocked out of the tournament.

The only goal came from Matías Galarza, who fired a low, long‑range shot past Turkey goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır just 63 seconds into the match. Galarza’s strike was the first World Cup goal of the tournament.

In the first half, former Newcastle United striker Miguel Almirón was sent off after covering his mouth during an on‑field confrontation with Turkey’s Mert Mülder. The sending‑off was the first in World Cup history for a player who covered their mouth.

Paraguay’s defense held firm, but the match was not without drama. In the 88th minute, Deniz Gül had a clear chance to level the score when Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill could only parry the shot, which then missed the target. In the final seconds, Merih Demiral’s header was wide, leaving him visibly disappointed as his teammates left the pitch in frustration.
