Pakistan says it expects US-Iran deal within 24 hours

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has been mediating between Iran and the United States to end their conflict, said on Saturday that a peace agreement would “likely” be finalised within 24 hours.

“We are closer to a peace deal than ever before. With finalisation likely expected in the next 24 hours, Pakistan is preparing for the electronic signing of the peace deal immediately after, followed by technical level talks next week,” he wrote in a post on the social media platform X.

After weeks of stalled talks over the terms of an initial memorandum of understanding, Washington and Tehran have recently signalled that they are nearing an agreement.

Tensions remained as the United States reported that it had downed several Iranian drones that were targeting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz early Saturday.

Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB quoted Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who said that until a comprehensive agreement is reached on all issues, “it cannot be said with certainty that an understanding has been achieved with the United States”.

Pakistan has urged both sides to reach a settlement after a fragile ceasefire was agreed in April and Islamabad hosted talks that ended without a resolution to the conflict that began in late February following US‑Israeli strikes on Iran.

Sharif added in his post that he was “confident that this historic peace deal will form a strong foundation for lasting peace”, thanking both Washington and Tehran “for their ongoing commitment”.
