Oyo Governor Makinde bans Okada rides at night.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has enacted a statewide ban on commercial motorcycle operations during nighttime hours. Okada riders are prohibited from operating between 10:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. as part of a broader security initiative aimed at reducing criminal activity and improving public safety.

The restriction is a key element of Executive Order No. 002 of 2026, which the governor signed on Friday to strengthen security, enforce vehicle registration regulations, and enhance traffic management throughout the state.

The decision follows escalating security concerns, notably the ongoing captivity of teachers and pupils abducted in Oriire Local Government Area more than 20 days ago.

During the signing ceremony, Makinde explained that the measures were intended to counter emerging security threats and ensure stricter compliance with existing traffic and vehicle registration laws.

The governor noted that unregistered vehicles—motorcycles and tricycles—have increasingly been used to facilitate criminal activities, complicating efforts by security agencies to track suspects and investigate crimes due to the lack of identifiable registration details.

He added that the executive order establishes a legal framework for rigorous enforcement of vehicle registration requirements and other traffic regulations, including measures targeting offences such as driving against traffic that pose risks to public safety.

Makinde stated that designated enforcement authorities have been empowered to arrest offenders and impound vehicles, motorcycles, and tricycles found to be in breach of the order’s provisions.

The governor further clarified that individuals apprehended under the executive order will be prosecuted in accordance with the law, and any seized assets and properties will be handled through established legal procedures.
