Tension in Osun APC as Omisore loyalists dump party

By Shina Abubakar, Osogbo

There is growing unease within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State after a wave of resignations by supporters of former national scribe Senator Iyiola Omisore. The departures have raised concerns about the party’s internal cohesion.

Omisore had previously sought the APC governorship nomination alongside Bola Oyebamiji, only to be disqualified along with six other aspirants. Attempts to reconcile the factions have stalled, as the Omisore camp insists that their demand for legislative tickets was not endorsed by the party leadership.

Within a week, more than five prominent APC members linked to the Omisore group resigned without providing reasons. Among those who left were former Education Commissioner Oladoyin Bamisayemi, Commissioner for Political Matters Taiwo Akeju, Special Adviser on Higher Education Jamiu Olawumi, and former state lawmaker Adeyeye Olajide.

APC figures have taken to social media to criticize the departures, arguing that the timing—just months before the governorship election—could harm the party’s prospects. Funso Fagbohungbe branded Bamisayemi’s exit as ingratitude, noting that the former commissioner had served as a two‑term lawmaker and spent twelve years as Education Commissioner. Fagbohungbe contended that Bamisayemi had no moral standing to accuse the APC of “enslaving” its members.

“It is time we expose their falsehoods. Bamisayemi served as a two‑term lawmaker under Aregbesola, and former Governor Gboyega Oyetola appointed him Commissioner for Education. Yet he accuses the party of enslaving members. His background is the PDP, and now that he has returned to his original party affiliation, he should not malign our party,” he said.

While the defectors have publicly announced their next steps, Olawumi was spotted at the Accord party campaign media office with committee members, suggesting that he may be aligning with or supporting Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re‑election campaign.
