OPC disowns suspects arrested in Adelabu family kidnap case

LAGOS – The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has clarified that it is not linked to the individuals arrested over the kidnapping of former Power Minister Chief Adebayo Adelabu’s sister and her twin nephews in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The statement came after a suspect claimed to be affiliated with the group.

President Wasiu Afolabi issued a statement asserting that OPC has no ties to the arrested persons and denounced any attempts to associate the organization with criminal conduct.

Afolabi noted that OPC routinely assists law‑enforcement agencies in tackling security issues and has consistently delivered community‑based security support when needed.

He also stressed that the organization cannot be linked to criminal activity under any circumstances.

He added that people arrested for crimes in the South‑West sometimes falsely claim affiliation with OPC to mislead authorities or gain leniency.

He described these claims as impersonation and urged security agencies to regard them as false.

Afolabi reiterated that OPC maintains strict internal standards and does not tolerate criminal behaviour among its members.

He added that members are guided by stringent codes of conduct and are expected to uphold discipline and integrity within their communities.

The group also expressed its readiness to support government efforts to address insecurity, including kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes.

It noted that it has the capacity and structure to contribute meaningfully to community security, but it has not yet been formally engaged by South‑West state governments.

Afolabi added that OPC remains committed to lawful engagement and cooperation with security agencies in the fight against crime.
