NYC criticizes Arewa YouthAssembly for calling for the impeachment of Governors Abiodun and Mbah

The National Youth Council has issued a strong rebuke of the Arewa Youth Assembly after the latter called for the impeachment of Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah. The council described the move as irresponsible, politically misguided, and beyond the remit of any youth organization.

In a statement released on Monday, National Vice President of the Council Comrade Kehinde Olorunjubelo said the Arewa Youth Assembly erred by intervening in the internal affairs of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), a specialised political body that has its own established mechanisms for handling disputes.

The council argued that no youth group—especially one that claims to represent northern youths—should involve itself in the operations, leadership dynamics, or political disagreements of the PGF.

“The Progressive Governors Forum is an internal political platform with its own constitutional processes and conflict‑resolution mechanisms. It is therefore unnecessary, inappropriate, and politically immature for any youth assembly to insert itself into matters that do not concern the welfare or collective interests of Nigerian youths,” the statement read.

The council added that the Arewa Youth Assembly attempted to politicise the youth constituency and pull young Nigerians into partisan battles driven by disgruntled political interests.

“Youths should not dabble into Progressive Governors’ Forum politics, and they should not bastardize the youth constituency with this kind of politics influenced by disgruntled elements seeking relevance through media noise,” Olorunjubelo said.

The council further noted that the impeachment call revealed a limited understanding of constitutional governance and democratic procedures, emphasizing that impeachment is a serious legislative process that cannot be reduced to political propaganda or emotional coercion.

It argued that, instead of expending energy on political distractions, youth organisations should concentrate on pressing national concerns that affect young Nigerians, such as unemployment, insecurity, inadequate education, economic hardship, and youth empowerment.

“Nigerian youths expect advocacy on issues that affect their future and survival, not unnecessary interference in intra‑party affairs. Attempting to turn youths into political tools for settling elite disagreements diminishes the credibility of youth advocacy in the country,” the statement continued.

The National Youth Council therefore called on all youth groups across the country to remain focused, responsible, and independent, and to avoid actions that could draw the youth constituency into avoidable political controversies.
