On Wednesday evening, a service of songs marked the beginning of the final journey home for popular actor Alexx Ekubo. The event, held at The Monarch Event Centre in Lekki, drew a large gathering of celebrities, entertainers, and dignitaries from the film, music, and lifestyle industries, all coming to honour the late actor.

In keeping with the family’s request for a strictly all‑white dress code, attendees arrived in white attire as a tribute to Alexx’s vibrant fashion sense. Among those present were Kate Henshaw, Ebele Okaro, Ruth Kadiri, comedian AY, and his brother Yomi.

Other notable guests included the celebrity couple Stan Nze and Blessing Obasi, Nancy Isime, actor Frederick Leonard, media personalities Frank Edoho and Ebuka Obi‑Uchendu, Nigerian singer Chike Osebukam, and socialite Cubana Chief Priest. The service of songs opened the series of funeral activities planned for the actor.

Additional attendees comprised former Nigerian Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili, Ini Edo, pastors Ituah Ighodalo and Jerry Eze, and Moses Bliss, among others. Pastor Ighodalo offered prayers for Alexx’s widow, Anwuli, while Bliss, Peterson Okopi, Ebuka Songs, Nathaniel Bassey, Mercy Chinwo, Kaestrings, and the Laud Urban Choir led worship and ministration.

The Ekubo family had previously released an obituary statement on the actor’s official Instagram page, asking fans and the public to keep the immediate family in their thoughts and prayers. During the event, friends, family, and colleagues spoke about Alexx, who died on May 11, 2026, at the age of 40.

An in‑law delivered a heartfelt tribute, reflecting on the impact, kindness, and memories Alexx left behind. Colleagues such as Nancy Isime, Yemi Alade, Stan Nze, IK Ogbonna, and Ini Edo shared tearful and fond memories, highlighting the actor’s warmth, generosity, and intentional love.

Isime remarked that “Alex was a good man,” noting that everyone he met left with a smile thanks to his uplifting nature. Yemi Alade recalled that Alex provided the motivation she needed to continue pursuing music at a crucial time in her career, and appeared in her hit track “Johnny” without asking for a fee.

Ogbonna delivered a deeply moving tribute, describing the profound bond he shared with Alexx and the difficulty of saying goodbye to a best friend. He said he still reaches for his phone to call Alexx, hoping the call would go through, and wishes for one more conversation even though he knows it can never happen again.

Mrs. Ezekwesili noted that it is difficult to serve as a song leader for someone younger than her generation, adding that nothing anyone says can comfort the family. She praised Alexx’s accomplishments and steadfast faith, attributing his passing at 40 to God’s sovereignty.

The service of songs marks the start of Alexx Ekubo’s funeral rites. After the Lagos ceremony, a wake will be held on June 17 at his family residence in Arochukwu, Abia State, leading up to the final funeral service and interment on June 18.
