Nollywood mourns the death of actor Alexx Ekubo, aged 40

The Nigerian film industry mourns the loss of Alexx Ekubo, a widely admired star, who died on Tuesday at the age of 40.

Industry sources confirmed that Ekubo had been privately fighting kidney cancer for some time—a condition that explained his extended absence from public appearances and his lack of social‑media activity since late 2024.

According to reports, Ekubo was taken to hospital on Monday, May 11, and was placed on life support after his health deteriorated. He died on Tuesday afternoon.

Although the actor kept his illness private, rumors of a serious medical issue began circulating in early 2025. Close friend and colleague Godwin Nnadiekwe posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, indicating the seriousness of the situation:

“I’m struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me. To think you already prepared your Will—it’s a heartbreak I can’t quite describe. Rest well, my friend.”

The announcement prompted an outpouring of grief from Nollywood colleagues. Funke Akindele shared a somber message on her Instagram reels, writing, “Hmmmmmm. Rest in peace, Alex.”

Actor Bolanle Ninalowo, who is in the United States, expressed his shock and prayed for God to “heal your family and us all.”

Fans have taken to social media to honor his legacy, recalling his versatility, his “Johnny” persona in music videos, and his numerous leading roles in film.

Ekubo first gained national attention as the first runner‑up in the 2010 Mr. Nigeria competition. He quickly became a household name, earning several awards for his performances and emerging as a fashion icon within African entertainment.

His film credits include Afamefuna, Power of 1, A Sunday Affair, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, The Bling Lagosians, Catch.er, Zero Hour, The First Lady, Lagos Cougars, Weekend Getaway, Conversations in Transit, among others, often portraying charismatic or comedic characters.

At the time of publication, his family had not issued a formal statement regarding burial arrangements.
