Former presidential aide Babafemi Ojudu told Channels Television’s Inside Sources on Friday that many Nigerians are anxious about their future under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Ojudu said the present situation in the country is far removed from the ideals Nigerians fought for in the 1980s and 1990s.
“This is not the country we fought for in the 80s and 90s,” he said. “We had military rulers who controlled everyone, a lack of transparency and rampant corruption. That was why we rose up and fought to achieve the democratic nation we have today.”
He added, “Now, things seem to be moving as if nothing is working… Nobody is taking a stand or thinking critically, and that is very worrisome.”
Ojudu pointed to the judiciary’s current state as a stark contrast to the past: “When you look at the state of the judiciary today, it’s a far cry from what it was then.” He also compared the legislature, noting that “when you look at the legislature and compare it to what we had back then when Obasanjo was a military man, it’s a far cry. There was some independence then but now it’s not so.”
He continued, “When you look at the manner in which public officials carry themselves as if they are lord of the manor, the insecurity, the economic situation, the immorality across the board, the lack of hope that engulfs everywhere— all of us are worried. People are disturbed and afraid because they don’t know what tomorrow portends.”
