Nigerians face higher cooking gas costs across the country

The price of liquefied petroleum gas, commonly known as cooking gas, has risen across Nigeria as marketers cite a shortage of supply.

According to the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), the national price has surged to ₦1,500 per kilogram, up from ₦1,200 in Abuja.

NALPGAM president Edu Inyang and Executive Secretary Bassey Essien announced the increase in a joint statement issued over the weekend.

The hike represents a ₦300 rise per kilogram, or a 25 percent jump.

As a result, Nigerians already facing a high cost of living may have to pay an additional ₦300 or more for cooking gas, depending on their location.

“The citizens of Nigeria have woken up to buy cooking gas, which should be a social item, at a prohibitive cost of over ₦1,500 per kg,” NALPGAM said.

The marketers warned that without intervention from the federal government, the price increase could spark public unrest against gas filling station owners.

“We feel that if the situation is not immediately checked, the citizens may rise against the owners of gas filling stations,” the marketers added.
