Nigerian army responds to claims of arresting a retired general who criticized Akpabio.

The Nigerian Army has refuted reports that Haruna Garba Gololo, commonly known as Garus Gololo, is a retired general in the Nigerian Army.

In a statement released on Tuesday through its social media channels, the Army called the claims that Gololo is a retired general “false and misleading.”

The statement came after some media outlets reported that a retired Nigerian army general had been arrested in Abuja for criticizing Senate President Godswill Akpabio over comments about the 2027 election.

According to the Army, Gololo is neither a serving nor a retired member of the Nigerian Army and has never served in the force in any capacity.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to categorically state that the said individual is neither a serving nor retired personnel of the Nigerian Army and has never at any time served in the Nigerian Army in any capacity whatsoever,” the statement read.

“Accordingly, the portrayal of the individual as a retired General of the Nigerian Army is false, misleading, and capable of creating wrong impressions in the minds of the public,” it added.

The Army urged media organisations to exercise due diligence and maintain professionalism, accuracy and fairness when reporting on the Armed Forces and national institutions.

It also called on relevant media platforms to correct the misrepresentation to prevent the spread of misinformation that could undermine public trust and institutional integrity.

The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to professionalism, transparency and the defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity in line with its constitutional responsibilities.
