Nigeria vs Zimbabwe: Warriors coach predicts Super Eagles will lose in Unity Cup semi‑final

Zimbabwe interim coach Kaitano Tembo says his side can trouble Nigeria again in the Unity Cup semi‑final at The Valley on Tuesday night, according to Afrik‑Foot.

Nigeria arrive as defending champions and have a stronger overall record in the fixture, with four wins and four draws in nine previous meetings. Zimbabwe’s only victory over the Super Eagles came on 1 August 1981, when the Warriors won 2‑0 in an international friendly.

The Super Eagles have never lost a competitive match against the Warriors, including an 8‑1 aggregate win during the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

Recent encounters, however, have been much tighter.

Zimbabwe held Nigeria to a 1‑1 draw in Rwanda during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in November 2023, with Kelechi Iheanacho’s strike cancelling out Walter Musona’s long‑range free‑kick. The Warriors were again frustrated on 25 March 2025, when Tawanda Chirewa scored a dramatic late equaliser in Uyo to earn another 1‑1 draw at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Those results added to Nigeria’s disappointing qualifying campaign and ultimately contributed to their failure to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Tembo believes the recent draws can inspire his players, but he stresses the need for focus on the current match.

“Yes, obviously to some extent,” Tembo said when asked whether the recent draws could give Zimbabwe confidence. “But at the same time, I think what’s important is for us to approach every game as it comes, one game at a time. This is a different game, a different scenario, and a different situation. So we need to make sure that we prepare and not really worry too much about previous results. What’s key is for us to go out there and give our all, play to win, and not dwell too much on the past.”

Tembo excited by youthful Zimbabwe squad

Preparations for the tournament have been uneven for both teams because the competition falls outside the official FIFA calendar.

Several senior Nigerian players, including Wilfred Ndidi and Moses Simon, are doubtful after arriving late to camp. Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has also named an experimental squad containing 12 debutants as part of a rebuilding process following the country’s World Cup qualification failure.

Tembo admitted Zimbabwe also faced logistical difficulties, with some players arriving in camp only shortly before the match.

“I think the preparations have been going well, although we haven’t had a full complement of all the players with the rest of the players joining in today,” Tembo revealed.

Despite those challenges, the former Zimbabwe international said he has been encouraged by the mentality shown by his squad in Birmingham.

“Looking forward to the game, we can only promise to go out there and give our best, play some good, entertaining football, and we hope our fans will come and support us. If that is all done, then hopefully we will make them proud.”

Zimbabwe will again look to Wolves youngster Tawanda Chirewa, whose late goal stunned Nigeria in Uyo last year. New arrivals such as Prosper Padera, Godknows Murwira and Shane Maroodza have also strengthened the squad.

Murwira was drafted in as a late replacement for Tawanda Maswanhise, who was excused from the squad after a demanding season in Scotland with Motherwell.

Tembo is particularly excited by the young players in camp and believes they now have a chance to announce themselves on a big stage in London.

“Yes, most definitely. I think the players that we have at the moment in camp, I’m very positive and very excited. Looking at young players like Abubakar Moffat, Mongameli Tshuma, Tawanda Chirewa, and Corbin Mthunzi — those are players, as well as Future Sibanda, who have raised their hands, and hopefully they will be able to show what they can do. I am quite positive,” the tactician added.

A large Zimbabwean community is expected inside The Valley for the semi‑final, and Tembo hopes the support from the stands can push his players toward a famous result against one of Africa’s biggest football nations.

“It’s a huge occasion for us, coming here and making our debut in the Unity Cup. We should always try to make a statement. We will have more fans coming to support us, and that should spur the players on and encourage them to perform to the best of their abilities. We also have a few players based here who should adapt more easily to the conditions and perform well.”

Kick‑off is scheduled for 8:30 pm in London, with the winners advancing to Friday’s final against either Jamaica or India.
