Nigeria Should Lead the Digital Revolution, Not Just Participate — Galaxy Backbone

Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB), Nigeria’s state‑owned provider of information technology and shared services, has called on the country to take a proactive role in shaping emerging technologies rather than merely adopting global innovations.

Professor Ibrahim Adeyanju, Managing Director of GBB, made the statement at a press conference in Abuja yesterday, marking the company’s 20th anniversary. He emphasized Nigeria’s capacity to lead Africa’s digital transformation.

GBB has spent two decades building a shared technology platform for the federal government, aiming to eliminate duplication, cut costs, and improve service delivery across public institutions.

Adeyanju explained that the agency has evolved from a basic connectivity provider into a national asset that now covers almost 30 states. The infrastructure links various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), forming a solid foundation for digital governance.

He noted that, in line with its vision, GBB has established world‑class data centres and a cloud platform to increase the efficiency of public offices. These facilities keep critical national data secure and hosted within the country, safeguarding national sovereignty.

The GBB leader highlighted that the current administration is investing heavily in personnel, cybersecurity, and operational standards to align with global best practices. This effort seeks to position the firm as a leading digital transformation driver across Sub‑Saharan Africa.

He said, “The next chapter of Galaxy Backbone will therefore not simply be about building infrastructure; it will be about maximising infrastructure. It will be about enabling innovation through smart digital solutions, expanding digital access, supporting sub‑nationals, businesses and institutions.”

“Our new brand identity symbolises our evolution from a government ICT infrastructure provider to a national digital transformation enabler, aggregator and platform connecting governments, businesses and institutions through secure and smart digital solutions,” he added.
