The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has praised the Federal Government for publishing the General Guidelines for the Transition and Implementation of the Tax Acts 2025. NECA described the guidelines as a key milestone that bolsters confidence in Nigeria’s tax reform efforts.

The guidelines clarify how the new tax framework will be applied and confirm that the Tax Acts 2025 will not be enforced retroactively for accounting periods before January 1, 2026.

NECA Director‑General Adewale‑Smatt Oyerinde said the government’s clarification removes the uncertainty that could have arisen from a retrospective application of the new tax provisions to completed accounting periods.

Oyerinde added that by outlining how past and current tax obligations should be handled, the Federal Government has reinforced confidence in the reform process and shown a commitment to stakeholder engagement that promotes compliance and economic stability.

“The issuance of the transition guidelines shows that constructive engagement between government and the private sector can yield outcomes that strengthen investor confidence, promote regulatory certainty and support economic growth. By affirming that the Tax Acts 2025 will not be applied retrospectively, the Federal Government sends a clear message that fairness, predictability and respect for the rule of law remain central to Nigeria’s economic reform agenda,” he said.
