The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has said that television and radio stations in Nigeria are responsible for the fines, licence suspensions and other sanctions imposed on them.
South‑East Zonal Director Ijeoma Theo‑Obodo made the statement on Wednesday during NBC’s message at the 13th Vision Africa Training Institute in Umuahia, Abia State.
According to the zonal director, every station that has been sanctioned had first received severe warnings from the commission for violating various sections of the broadcasting code.
She added that the NBC’s role is to safeguard the integrity of the airwaves and protect viewers and listeners from offensive content.
Obodo rejected accusations that the NBC is unfair or selective in its dealings with broadcasters, and urged the public to report offensive or inappropriate material so that the commission can investigate and take action.
The director also noted that some music produced by certain artists under the guise of religious songs is unsuitable for public broadcast, and praised the Vision Africa Institute for training media practitioners in the proper use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Earlier in the event, Abia State Governor Alex Otti and Methodist Archbishop Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha urged Nigerian media professionals to employ AI for national unity and development, rather than as a tool for misinformation and fear.
