The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has formally distanced itself from the Take It Back (TIB) Movement, led by activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore. NANS claims the movement pursues political goals under the pretext of activism.

According to NANS, it will not participate in any protest organized by TIB, arguing that its advocacy strategy differs from that of the group.

In a statement released in Abuja, NANS President Akinteye Babatunde Afeez said the Take It Back Movement has increasingly blurred the boundaries between activism, journalism, and partisan politics, raising doubts about its true intentions.

He noted that the movement’s activities appear to serve political interests rather than genuine advocacy on issues affecting Nigerians.

Akinteye also dismissed claims that questioned his student status, calling them “false and misleading.” He affirmed that he is a bona fide student at Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, and accused the publication that reported otherwise of failing to verify facts before publishing.

He urged media organizations to maintain professionalism by ensuring accuracy and fairness in their reporting.

The president further alleged that the Take It Back Movement is increasingly perceived as a political platform rather than an independent advocacy group. He claimed that some individuals have linked the movement to organizations such as the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN), although no evidence was provided to support these allegations.

Addressing the recent abductions of students and teachers in parts of the country, Akinteye stated that NANS would not collaborate with Sowore or the Take It Back Movement in any protest related to the incident.

He praised organized labor and education stakeholders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), for their efforts to advocate for victims of kidnappings and insecurity.

According to Akinteye, NANS remains committed to demanding the safe return of abducted students and holding authorities accountable for protecting educational institutions nationwide.

He emphasized that the association will continue to champion the interests of Nigerian students through peaceful and lawful means.

Akinteye reiterated NANS’s commitment to national peace and stability, insisting that the association will not support actions that could promote violence or public disorder.
