The Federation of Ahlus-Sunnah Organizations in Nigeria (FASON) has stated that Islam is not connected to terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, or any other criminal activity.
The organization affirms that anyone who follows Islamic teachings and principles will not engage in criminal acts against individuals, groups, or communities.
National Amir Sheikh Tajudeen Abdul-Kareem (Baba Lagbeni) made these remarks at a press conference in Ibadan, which was attended by Deputy National Amir Alhaji Salisu Abdullahi, Amir of the Universal Muslim Brotherhood Alhaji Abdulateef Olaniyan, and Chairman of the Sharia Panel in Oyo State Sheikh Abdullahi Adedeji.
Abdul-Kareem said the conference was necessary in light of the recent abduction of 39 students and seven teachers in Oyo State and the negative comments made by some individuals and groups against Islam and Muslims nationwide. He maintained that all acts committed by bandits, terrorists, or other groups in Nigeria or elsewhere have no basis in Islam.
Quoting Qur’an 5:23 regarding punishment for terrorism, banditry, and other vices, he added that those who link Islam with such crimes are enemies of Islam and its followers.
He urged the Federal Government, led by President Bola Ahmed, as well as state governors and security agencies, to promptly address insecurity across the country.
Abdul-Kareem revealed that FASON members have been praying for the release of the 39 students and seven teachers kidnapped in Oriire local government area of Oyo State last month, condemning the abduction.
He called on governments to enact laws and policies that improve citizens’ living conditions.
“This press conference focuses on the current issues in the country, especially the abduction of students and teachers in Oyo State. It also reflects our resolve to pray for the successful release of those in captivity,” he said. “We have been praying for over a week and will continue until they are freed. We also pray for the country to overcome these challenges. We do not want war in Nigeria or elsewhere.”
“Bandits should stop their activities, as there is no reward for them here or in heaven. We urge the federal, state, and local governments not to treat security issues lightly or use banditry to create problems in Oyo State.”
“Do not attribute violence or banditry to Islam or Muslims. People must understand that Islam has no link to terrorism or kidnapping. We also advise governments at all levels to fulfill their duties for the people, ensuring that measures that improve life are implemented.”
“Those who cause trouble should know that unjust killing is wrong. Whoever kills people unjustly should be punished according to Islamic law. The government must maintain order, and the public must act responsibly. Unjust killers are not Muslims; a good Muslim will not kill a fellow human unjustly, just as a good Christian will not.”
“Some individuals seek to tarnish Islam’s image, but they will not succeed. We must work together for peace and harmony. A believer in Islam will not kill another human being.”
“Bandits should fear God and desist from criminal activities, as they are harmful. Politicians must recognize that this is a political season and should not mix politics with religion, as they are distinct.”
