Lionel Messi’s father, Jorge Messi, is receiving medical care for an undisclosed illness, and the family has requested privacy from the press amid circulating rumors during the World Cup.
In a statement released through Fox Sports, the Messi family said, “Jorge is going through a health situation.” They did not disclose the nature of the illness affecting the 68‑year‑old.
“He is currently under medical observation, recovering and progressing favorably within his current condition,” the statement added.
After Argentina’s 3‑0 win over Algeria in the tournament’s opening match, Messi mentioned that he was dealing with a difficult personal situation, but he did not provide further details.
The family’s announcement, issued by Messi’s media office, appeared on the same day that reports of Jorge Messi’s death were circulating in Argentina.
“At times like these, we ask for responsibility, prudence and humanity,” the family said. “A person’s health and the peace of mind of their loved ones should not be the subject of speculation or irresponsible media interest.”
The statement concluded that any further updates would be communicated by the family.
