Messi Breaks Ronaldo’s World Cup Goal Record as Argentina Defeats Algeria 3-0 in 2026 Qualifier

Argentina captain Lionel Messi broke the World Cup goal record held by Ronaldo Nazário and Miroslav Klose in his opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He also joined Ronaldo as the only players to score in five different World Cup tournaments.

The 38‑year‑old celebrated his 200th international cap with a hat‑trick against Algeria.

La Albiceleste opened the tournament at Kansas City Stadium, facing Algeria in Group J.

Argentina started strong, with Messi scoring early, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Algeria equalised, only for their goal to be disallowed for the same reason.

In the 17th minute, Messi received the ball in the attacking third, turned quickly, and drove toward the Algerian goal, firing a powerful shot from distance. Luca Zidane managed to touch the ball, but the strike found the top corner. The eight‑time Ballon d’Or winner celebrated with his teammates, marking his 118th goal for Argentina.

Messi added two more goals to complete a hat‑trick that night, bringing his World Cup tally to 16 goals. This places him above Ronaldo Nazário (15) and equal with Miroslav Klose (16) in the all‑time rankings.

Argentina defeated Algeria 3‑0 in the Group J match.
