Maresca Agrees to Take Over at Manchester City

Manchester City are nearing the finalisation of a deal to appoint Enzo Maresca as head coach, Sky Italy reports.

A verbal agreement is said to have been reached among all parties, with Sky Italy stating that City will pay Chelsea over £17 million (€20 million) in compensation to secure Maresca as Pep Guardiola’s successor at the Etihad Stadium.

Sky Italy also reported on Monday that Maresca is expected to travel to Manchester within the next 24 hours to sign a three‑year contract.

Maresca, who left Chelsea by mutual consent on New Year’s Day, has been without a role since departing Stamford Bridge.

City has been negotiating compensation with Chelsea for Maresca, who left the club with three and a half years remaining on his contract.

During his sole full season at Chelsea, Maresca guided the Blues to UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup titles, and he departed the club in fifth place in the Premier League on January 1, five positions above their eventual 10th-place finish.

Maresca had been Guardiola’s assistant during Manchester City’s treble‑winning 2023 campaign, and he also steered the club’s Elite Development Squad to a Premier League 2 title in his lone season at the helm in 2020/21.

Guardiola departed the Etihad at the conclusion of the 2025/26 season after ten years at the helm, during which City secured 17 major trophies. The club finished second to Arsenal in the 2025/26 Premier League, marking the first time in Guardiola’s career that he did not win a league title in consecutive seasons.
