LAFIA — The Labour Party (LP) in Nasarawa State has announced that Hon. Jonathan Gaza, the member representing the Karu/Keffi/Kokona Federal Constituency, will run as the party’s candidate for governor in the 2027 election. Former Minister of Information Labaran Maku has been selected as the LP candidate for the Nasarawa North Senatorial District.

The selections were made during the party’s special nomination congress held in Lafia on Saturday.

Dr. Kalu Ekeh, the Returning Officer for the LP primaries in the state, confirmed that Gaza ran unopposed and was formally affirmed by delegates in accordance with the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act and the party’s electoral guidelines.

“Having satisfied all constitutional and procedural requirements, Hon. Jonathan Gaza is hereby declared the winner and duly returned elected as the Labour Party governorship candidate for Nasarawa State,” Ekeh said.

He added that Gaza will receive his certificate of return at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja next week.

Ekeh also announced that former Information Minister Labaran Maku emerged unopposed as the party’s candidate for the Nasarawa North Senatorial District after fulfilling all constitutional and procedural requirements.

Maku is expected to lead the party’s campaign in the Nasarawa North senatorial by‑election scheduled for 20 June 2026, following the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki.

After his emergence, Gaza pledged to provide transformative leadership and to harness the state’s human and natural resources for development if elected governor in 2027.

He described his candidacy as a social contract with the people of Nasarawa State and promised to pursue policies that would reposition the state for greater progress.

“That which God has kept for the people of Nasarawa State—human and natural resources, among many other things—will be put together as a team, and, with the guidance of Almighty God, we will give Nasarawa State the vibrant position where God has destined it to be,” he said.

The LP governorship candidate also urged party supporters and residents of the state to conduct themselves peacefully and to back the Labour Party in future elections.

He expressed confidence that the party would present a credible alternative and deliver good governance to the people of Nasarawa State if given the opportunity.
