LP Announces 2027 Candidates for Governor, National Assembly, and State Assembly in Sokoto

SOKOTO — The Labour Party (LP) in Sokoto State has stepped up its preparations for the 2027 general elections after completing its primaries, which selected candidates for the governorship, National Assembly, and State House of Assembly through a consensus arrangement.

The primaries, conducted on Saturday under the oversight of the party’s Primaries Electoral Committee, marked the official start of the party’s campaign preparations for the upcoming elections.

At the conclusion of the exercise, Comrade Aminu Umar Ahmad was chosen as the party’s governorship candidate. Candidates were also selected for the three senatorial districts, 11 House of Representatives constituencies, and 30 State House of Assembly seats.

Chairman of the Primaries Electoral Committee, Elder Julius Inedu, said the process was carried out peacefully and in accordance with the party’s constitution, electoral guidelines, and relevant provisions of the Electoral Act.

He added that the consensus arrangement adopted by party stakeholders reflected the collective will of members and demonstrated the party’s commitment to internal democracy and political stability.

“The Labour Party in Sokoto State has demonstrated its commitment to internal democracy, unity and peaceful political engagement. The consensus arrangement adopted by stakeholders has strengthened the party and positioned us for the task ahead,” Inedu said.

Inedu explained that extensive consultations involving aspirants, delegates and party leaders across the state preceded the emergence of the candidates, ensuring broad participation and acceptance of the process.

“We are satisfied with the level of cooperation shown by aspirants, delegates and stakeholders. The process was peaceful and devoid of rancour, which is a positive signal for the future of the party in Sokoto State,” he added.

Secretary of the Primaries Electoral Committee, Abdullahi Bello, also spoke about the successful conduct of the exercise, describing it as evidence of the growing strength and acceptance of the Labour Party in the state.

“Our members have shown remarkable maturity and discipline throughout the exercise. We are now focused on building a stronger party structure and mobilising support ahead of the 2027 general elections,” Bello said.

Party officials reported that stakeholders unanimously endorsed the consensus arrangement and pledged to work together toward achieving electoral success in 2027.

This development comes as the Labour Party seeks to build on the momentum it gained after the 2023 general elections, during which it expanded its national profile and strengthened its presence in several states.

Political observers note that the party is positioning itself as an alternative platform in Sokoto State, a region traditionally dominated by the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party.

Labour Party leaders said their 2027 campaign will focus on accountability, transparent governance, economic empowerment and inclusive development, with an emphasis on addressing the needs and aspirations of ordinary citizens.

With the primaries concluded, attention is expected to shift to grassroots mobilisation, voter engagement and campaign planning as the party seeks to expand its influence ahead of the polls.

The party expressed confidence that its candidates possess the capacity to provide credible leadership and effective representation, while reaffirming its commitment to democratic participation and the development of Sokoto State.
