Liverpool’s Konate agrees four-year deal to join Real Madrid

France international Ibrahima Konate has agreed a four‑year contract with Real Madrid after leaving Liverpool, a source close to the negotiations told AFP on Monday.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, who was re‑elected on Sunday night, said last week that the centre‑back would be his first signing and that he would also bring Jose Mourinho as coach.

The club is expected to make the official announcement of Konate’s arrival on a deal that runs until 2030 on Tuesday, the source added.

The 27‑year‑old will join several French teammates, including captain Kylian Mbappé, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga, the latter of whom was not called up for the World Cup.

Konate’s move marks his fourth club after spells at Sochaux, Leipzig and Liverpool, where he joined five seasons ago.

He appeared in 183 matches for Liverpool, winning the FA Cup in his first season under Jürgen Klopp, as well as the League Cup, but ending as a runner‑up in the Champions League final against Real Madrid.

After Arne Slot took over as manager in 2024, Liverpool captured the Premier League title last season.

This season has been more difficult for the Reds, who secured qualification for next season’s Champions League only on the final day of the Premier League campaign.

With 28 caps for France, Konate has been selected by Didier Deschamps for the World Cup in North America and is competing for a starting spot in central defence.

France will play their final pre‑World Cup friendly against Northern Ireland in Lille on Monday evening.
