Lagos Authorities Advise Residents to Stay Indoors for May Clean‑Up Drive

Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has urged residents across the state to stay indoors and fully participate in the May edition of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, scheduled for Saturday, May 30, from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

In a statement issued late Thursday, Wahab praised Lagos residents for the strong turnout during the sanitation exercise that was reintroduced in April.

He described environmental cleanliness as essential for healthy living and sustainable development, urging residents to dedicate the two‑hour session to cleaning their homes, drainage channels, surroundings, and public spaces within their communities.

The commissioner applauded the level of compliance seen in the April edition and encouraged Lagosians to improve upon that participation, noting that the monthly sanitation exercise has now become a permanent programme in the state.

According to Wahab, the First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo‑Olu, will lead a delegation of government officials to monitor compliance in Alimosho Local Government Area, while the Lagos State Head of Service, Olabode Agoro, will oversee monitoring activities in Apapa Local Government Area.

He also disclosed that the state government has deployed sufficient compactor trucks across Lagos to ensure the prompt evacuation of waste generated during and after the sanitation exercise.

Tokunbo Wahab added that all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs, will actively participate in monitoring the exercise to ensure compliance and promote a cleaner environment statewide.

The commissioner urged residents to embrace the sanitation initiative and develop a lasting culture of cleanliness, warning against unhygienic practices and dirty surroundings.

He cautioned residents against patronising cart pushers for waste disposal, describing the practice as illegal, while noting that the operations of Private Sector Participation, PSP, operators have been expanded to serve more communities across the state.

The Commissioner warned that abatement notices would be issued to residents who fail to clean their surroundings during the exercise, adding that defaulters risk prosecution.

Reaffirming the state government’s commitment to maintaining a clean, hygienic, and flood‑free Lagos, the commissioner advised residents to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations.
