Labour Party’s structures remain intact despite internal crisis ahead of Lagos 2027, party secretary says

The Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State says its organisational structures are fully operational in all 20 local government areas as preparations ramp up for the 2027 general elections.

Party Secretary for Lagos State, Mr. Sam Okpala, made the statement during a Tuesday interview with journalists in Lagos.

Okpala noted that the party has reinforced its internal structures and implemented necessary arrangements to secure a strong performance in the upcoming general elections.

He assured members and supporters that, despite ongoing internal disagreements, the party remains united and operational.

According to him, the Labour Party in Lagos has already launched voter sensitisation and mobilisation activities across communities, with plans to further broaden its grassroots presence statewide.

He also pointed out that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has required political parties to register members via its nationwide electronic registration platform.

Okpala said the party began its registration exercise shortly after the 2023 general elections and has continued the process ever since.

“We started preparation since 2023 and we are still here today and stronger,” he said.

The LP chieftain described the party as people‑focused, emphasizing that its activities aim to mobilise citizens and promote voter participation ahead of future elections.

He urged residents not to let fear, intimidation, or concerns about electoral malpractice deter them from participating in the democratic process.

“Fear of violence, intimidation and electoral malpractice contribute to low voter turnout. We do not want people to be afraid and fail to perform their civic responsibility,” he said.

Regarding the leadership crisis, Okpala acknowledged that internal disputes have affected the organisation but expressed confidence that the Supreme Court will resolve the matter in the party’s favour.

“We are hopeful that as the Supreme Court gives its judgment, it will be in our favour and we will reclaim the party,” he said.

He maintained that the Labour Party remains optimistic about enhancing its political performance and making a stronger impact in Nigeria’s 2027 elections.
