Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has issued a formal apology to Julian Nagelsmann, Germany’s head coach, over a remark he made before the country’s FIFA World Cup campaign.

During a FIFA World Cup broadcast on Magenta TV, where Klopp appeared as a pundit alongside former Germany international Thomas Müller, he commented on Germany’s squad selection. He said, “Fortunately, Julian Nagelsmann is still picking the team.” The use of the word “still” was interpreted as suggesting uncertainty about Nagelsmann’s future.

After Germany’s 7‑1 win over debutants Curacao on Sunday, June 14, Klopp publicly apologized. He explained, “I have already identified the most despised word of the year: ‘Still.’ I could have slapped myself for that, but it was too late as I was live on TV. It just came out so effortlessly, and it holds no significance.” He added, “What I have come to understand is that I will be 59 on Tuesday, and I am still an idiot.”

Klopp reaffirmed his support for Nagelsmann, stating, “We are entirely behind you, regardless of what you decide with this. Nothing will arise that is meant to disrupt the process here.”

Klopp has not managed a football team since resigning as Liverpool’s manager in 2024. Nagelsmann, who has served as Head of Global Football at Red Bull, has been mentioned as a possible successor to the German coach.
