United States President Donald Trump said that Iran would now face consequences for its delay in negotiating a peace deal.

Trump made the comment in a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, the day after he suggested that an agreement was close to being reached.

His remarks followed renewed exchanges of fire between Iran and the United States after an American helicopter was shot down, further straining a ceasefire that began in April but has been punctuated by sporadic violence.

The incident prompted international calls for restraint on the eve of the World Cup, which the United States is co‑hosting and Iran is set to participate in.

Trump stated that Iran had been completely defeated, just one day after claiming that talks to end the Middle East war were in their final stages.

“Iran is all talk and no action. They’ve taken too long to negotiate a deal that would have been great for them, now they will have to pay the price,” he wrote.

The conflict, which began with U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iran, threw the region into chaos and rattled global markets before the fragile truce was established.
