Insurers to Deny Claims from Policyholders Who Miss the NIN Deadline

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has unveiled a mobile app for Nigerians to modify their data on the National Identification Number (NIN).

After the April 30, 2026 deadline for linking the National Identity Number (NIN) to insurance policies passed, insurers announced they will refuse to process claims from policyholders who have not complied with the requirement.

Mrs. Ebelechukwu Nwachukwu, head of the Publicity Committee of the Insurers Committee, made the statement during a briefing to journalists following the committee’s meeting in Lagos.

She said the NIN linkage is now mandatory across the industry and that “no claims will be paid to any organisation or individual whose NIN has not been updated.”

In addition, Nwachukwu revealed plans to develop a Nigerian experience mortality table to enhance actuarial and risk‑pricing standards. The industry aims to launch the table by the end of June 2026, with a two‑month extension available if further data is needed.

Regarding financial inclusion, she announced the creation of a committee that will work with the National Credit Guarantee Company of Nigeria to define insurance’s role in supporting the country’s growing credit culture. The initiative is expected to broaden credit access for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), individuals and corporate organisations.

She noted that only 12 insurance companies have registered with the Nigerian Credit Bureau Limited, and only five are currently active.
