The Agbo Major‑led faction of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, claims that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, is the biggest threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

Major made the allegation on Friday during an interview on News Central Television.

He said the NNPP’s original focus was legislative leadership before the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Rabi’u Kwankwaso, entered the presidential race.

The faction had previously called for Amupitan’s resignation over alleged non‑compliance with court judgments regarding the party’s leadership dispute.

“The biggest enemy of our democracy is the INEC chairman himself. Like I said during the press conference, we are a law‑abiding political party,” Major said. “We don’t intend to take laws into our own hands, but what we have resolved to do is to shift it to the judiciary that has made its pronouncements.”

“They’ve taken their position on what they expect INEC to do. So, we have also shifted INEC to the court of the public, so that Nigerians will know that the biggest enemy of our democracy is the INEC Chairman himself,” Major added.
