An Indian military transport aircraft crashed while attempting to land at an air force base in the country’s remote northeast, the military announced in a statement.
The incident involved a Russian‑made Antonov An‑32, which the air force said “met with an accident today while landing at Jorhat”, a city in Assam state.
The statement did not disclose the number of occupants or any casualties.
It added that a court of inquiry is being convened to determine the cause of the accident.
Images of the crash site were broadcast by NDTV, showing a thick black plume of smoke and the aircraft apparently broken into pieces.
The An‑32 is a twin‑engine turboprop designed for high‑altitude operations and extreme climates. The Indian air force operates roughly 100 of these aircraft to deliver military supplies and civilian aid to the country’s most remote mountainous regions.
The last major crash involving an An‑32 occurred in 2019 in Arunachal Pradesh, near the China border, when 13 people were killed.
