The Inspector‑General of Police, Tunji Disu, urged senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force to stay proactive, intelligence‑driven and adaptable in tackling the country’s evolving security challenges.

Disu delivered the charge at the monthly conference of strategic senior officers, held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Tuesday, 9 June 2026.

The meeting brought together Deputy Inspectors‑General, Assistant Inspectors‑General, Commissioners of Police and other senior officers to review the national security landscape and evaluate current policing strategies.

Addressing the assembled officers, the IGP highlighted that Nigeria continues to confront a range of threats, including kidnapping, armed robbery, cult‑related violence, terrorism, banditry, farmer‑herder clashes and cyber‑enabled crimes. He stressed the need for stronger leadership, better coordination and effective operational responses to keep the Force ahead of emerging criminal threats.

Disu reported that since the previous conference in May 2026, the Force has achieved significant operational successes: eight suspected terrorists, 55 kidnapping suspects, 65 armed robbery suspects, 29 murder suspects and 42 suspected cultists have been arrested.

He also announced that 88 kidnapped victims were rescued, and that operations across the country recovered 114 firearms, 843 rounds of ammunition and 28 stolen vehicles.

The IGP directed Commissioners of Police nationwide to enhance intelligence gathering, deepen community policing initiatives and institutionalise regular stakeholder engagement with traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, market associations, transport unions and other key community partners. He emphasized that public trust and community partnership are essential to effective policing and crime prevention.

Reaffirming the Force’s commitment to professionalism and accountability, the IGP urged senior officers to lead by example, maintain discipline within their Commands, prioritise personnel welfare and ensure strict compliance with established operational procedures. He also highlighted the importance of engaging with the media to improve public understanding of policing activities and counter misinformation.
