The Inspector‑General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has ordered all members of the Nigeria Police Force to abstain from unauthorized social media activities that could jeopardise the Force’s integrity, professionalism, and public image.
According to a statement from CSP Anietie Iniedu, the Force’s Public Relations Officer, the directive responds to growing concerns about police personnel producing and sharing videos, hosting live sessions, and engaging in other social media activities while in uniform or in circumstances that identify them as members of the Nigeria Police Force without proper authorization.
IGP Disu emphasised that while social media remains an important communication tool, its use by active officers must comply with existing laws, regulations, and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.
He clarified that officers are prohibited from creating or distributing unauthorized content while wearing a police uniform, publicly commenting on official police matters, revealing sensitive operational details, or exploiting their police status for personal promotion, entertainment, or financial gain.
To enforce this directive, Commissioners of Police, Heads of Departments, Commanders, and other supervisory officers have been instructed to promptly educate the personnel under their command and ensure strict compliance. Supervisory officers will be held accountable for any failure to take appropriate action against violations within their jurisdictions.
The Inspector‑General also directed the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and the Professional Standards Department (X‑Squad) to intensify monitoring of social media platforms and identify officers engaged in activities that conflict with the professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its commitment to discipline, professionalism, and responsible public communication, and assures the public of its ongoing dedication to maintaining trust and institutional integrity.
