IGP Olatunji Disu has banned unauthorized social media use by Nigeria Police Force personnel, cautioned that such conduct could erode the Force’s integrity, professionalism, and public image.

The directive, issued in a statement on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, came after concerns grew about police officers engaging in social media while in uniform or in situations that unmistakably identified them as Force members without formal authorization.

IGP Disu noted that while social media is a useful tool for communication and public engagement, serving police officers must use it in strict accordance with existing laws, regulations, and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.

He emphasized that officers may not create or share unauthorized content while wearing a police uniform, publicly comment on official police matters, disclose sensitive operational information, or leverage their police status for personal promotion, entertainment, or commercial gain.

The police chief instructed all Commissioners of Police, Heads of Departments, Commanders, and other supervisory officers to promptly sensitize their subordinates and enforce strict adherence to the directive.

He added that supervisory officers would be held responsible for any failure to address violations by personnel under their supervision.

To reinforce enforcement, Disu instructed the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and the Professional Standards Department, known as X‑Squad, to intensify monitoring of social media platforms and identify officers whose online conduct falls below the professional standards expected of Nigeria Police Force members.

IGP Disu reiterated the Force’s commitment to discipline, professionalism, and responsible public communication, assuring Nigerians that the Police would maintain public trust and institutional integrity while carrying out its duties.
