Super Eagles and Slavia Prague defender Igoh Ogbu is set to miss about four months of action after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon, Afrik Foot reports.
The 26-year-old played the full games against Zimbabwe and Jamaica in the 2026 Unity Cup before playing another 45 minutes in the friendly games against Poland, where Calvin Bassey replaced him at the start of the second half.
In the buildup to Nigeria’s friendly game against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, Ogbu was injured in training and, after further scans, had to undergo surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles.

The two-time Czech Champion was gutted to have added a long-term injury to his long list of ailments after suffering two hamstring tears last season.
“It is unfortunate that it happened because I wanted to be part of the game against Portugal, but life is not always predictable,” Ogbu said in an interview with Footy Africa.
“The boys gave their all, but unfortunately we lost the game. I wish I could have been there to help them, but it was not to be.
“Injuries, though unfortunate, are part of football, even if no player likes to be injured. It is what it is, and I have to face it.
🤕 Igoh Ogbu podstoupil operaci
Během reprezentační přestávky si Igoh Ogbu přetrhl Achillovu šlachu. V minulých dnech podstoupil v Ústřední vojenské nemocnici ve Střešovicích operaci, která dopadla dobře.

Ahead of the 2026/2027 season, Igoh Ogbu revealed he’s looking to be fully fit at the start of September.
“The operation went well and I hope to start rehabilitation soon.
“Hopefully, if everything goes according to plan, I will be back for the start of next season. That is my target and I am working towards it,” the 1.87cm tall centre-back concluded.

The AFCON 2027 qualifiers dates are yet to be confirmed by CAF, but with the fixtures scheduled to start in September, it is unclear whether Ogbu will be available. Should he be unavailable, Afrik Foot highlights three defenders who can thrive in his absence.
1. Emmanuel Fernandez
The Rangers centre-back has already accrued three caps for Nigeria, and has shown promising signs in the 180 minutes Chelle has fielded him.

2. Chibuike Nwaiwu
Like Fernandez, Nwaiwu was called up for the March International friendlies after Calvin Bassey pulled out due to a back injury.

Nwaiwu was paired with Igoh Ogbu during the 2026 Unity Cup and played a key role as the Super Eagles failed to concede in the entirety of the tournament.
3. Benjamin Fredrick
The Brentford loanee was a crucial part of Nigeria’s World Cup campaign and was one of the few positives.
Coach Eric Chelle made the bold decision to place then captain William Troost-Ekong on the bench, placing a 20-year-old Fredrick in the starting line-up, and the youngster didn’t look deterred.

A knee injury kept Fredrick out of the AFCON 2025 tournament in Morocco, but with a big season at the Gtech Community Stadium beckoning for the 21-year-old, a return to the Super Eagles fold for the defender is on the cards.
