I endured years of emotional pain over a delay in having children – Ooni

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, said he has suffered years of emotional hardship, public criticism and pressure because of delays in fathering children after becoming king.

A statement released on Saturday in Ile‑Ife by Moses Olafare, the palace’s director of media and public affairs, reported that Oba Ogunwusi was openly mocked during that difficult period.

The statement said the Ooni made these comments while welcoming guests who had come to celebrate the birth of twin princes from one of his wives, Queen Mariam.

“I thank God today. There is nothing God cannot do,” the Ooni said, expressing joy over the latest addition to the royal family.

He added that he had never imagined having multiple wives during his upbringing, and that the responsibilities and customs tied to the throne changed his marital path.

He said his life has been punctuated by unforeseen challenges and mysteries, especially after becoming the Ooni of Oduduwa.

He recalled feeling intense pressure early in his reign to swiftly assume his royal marital duties.

He also said attempts were made to persuade his former wife to move to Ile‑Ife, with several senior traditional leaders and influential figures intervening, yet the relocation never occurred.

Reflecting on his youth, he revealed that he became a father at 19, describing it as one of the most difficult phases of his life.

He said the experience initially overwhelmed him, but his mother was instrumental in urging him to stay focused, hardworking and determined.

He also thanked First Lady Sen Oluremi Tinubu for her long‑term support and encouragement, calling her a mother figure who stood firmly beside him in tough times.
