Why Hull City could face points deduction after winning promotion

By Adegboyega Adeleye

Hull City’s promotion to the Premier League may be marred by the possibility of a points deduction, as the club reportedly needs to raise funds before the end of June to stay within financial regulations.

The BBC reports that Hull has exceeded the English Football League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) threshold by roughly £6 million, mainly because of promotion bonuses paid to players after the Championship play‑off final win over Middlesbrough.

Under current rules, overspending between £6 million and £8 million can trigger a six‑point penalty, though clubs may receive limited mitigation depending on their financial records.

Hull owner Acun Ilicali has acknowledged that the club must sell players before July 1 to bring its finances back within acceptable limits.

“We have overspent and we have to sell some players before July 1,” Ilicali said. “Now we are a Premier League team, the values of players have gone up, which is a good advantage.”

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire explained that promotion bonuses are counted in PSR calculations and can unexpectedly push clubs beyond the permitted loss limits, even after a successful season.

The situation places Hull in an unusual position: they have earned promotion and the financial rewards that come with the Premier League, yet they risk punishment because of the costs associated with that achievement.

Nigerian international Semi Ajayi is among the Hull City players who helped the Tigers secure promotion back to the Premier League. However, the club’s top‑flight return could be complicated by a points deduction if the PSR overspend is not addressed before the relevant deadlines.

Hull has the next few weeks to generate sufficient revenue through player sales, with several squad members reportedly attracting interest. Failure to do so could replace their promotion celebrations with a fight against sanctions before the 2026/2027 season begins.
