The House of Representatives has extended the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 budget from June 30, 2026 to September 30, 2026.
The decision followed an emergency session held on Monday.
House Leader Julius Ihonvbere chaired the debate, outlining the bill’s main provisions to lengthen the lifespan of the 2025 capital expenditure.
Ihonvbere explained that significant funds released to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) had remained unspent because of administrative bottlenecks, procurement delays, and implementation challenges.
He said the extension is intended to prevent the abandonment of critical infrastructure projects, allow ongoing projects to be completed, and settle outstanding obligations.
The emergency sitting was called by Acting Clerk Ibrahim Sidi, who issued a memo to all members on Sunday.
Sidi noted that the session was convened under Order Five, Rule 2, subsection 2 of the House’s Standing Orders.
