Governor Wike meets APC national chairman Yilwatda amid controversy over Rivers screening.

On Tuesday, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike travelled to Abuja to meet APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda at the latter’s residence.

The encounter occurs amid rising tension in Rivers State after the party conducted a screening of candidates for the State House of Assembly elections.

The APC screening committee, chaired by former lawmaker Muraina Ajibola, approved 33 aspirants and disqualified 65 of the 98 individuals who had bought nomination forms for the 32 seats.

The committee’s report cited reasons for disqualification that included inducement and attempted bribery, unsworn affidavits, invalid voter cards, and absence of party membership slips. Additional problems involved mismatched birth dates, irregular numbers of nominators, and other document inconsistencies.

Among those disqualified were several aspirants associated with Governor Siminalayi Fubara and former governorship candidate Tonye Cole.

The specifics of Wike’s closed‑door discussion with Yilwatda were not released at the time of this report.
