Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, voiced concerns about the country’s deteriorating security, attributing the recent spike in violence to the approach of the 2027 general elections.

The minister made the remarks on Thursday while launching a road construction project in Gombe State. He questioned the recurring pattern of increased insecurity in the lead‑up to national elections.

“Security should not be politicised or weaponised. Why does insecurity always rise when we are preparing for an election?” Umahi asked.

He warned that those who take lives under any pretext would face divine retribution, saying, “God is watching, and God is going to pay back.”

Umahi alleged that the politicisation of security is a tactic used by some politicians to gain power ahead of the 2027 elections, asserting that such individuals would be opposed by God.

“If anyone is involved in insecurity to advance their political ambitions, God will resist them,” he added.

The former governor of Ebonyi State assured Nigerians that the current turmoil would be temporary and that normalcy would soon return.

“We stand with the President, we pray for him, and we work with him. This phase will pass, and we will win our election by God’s special grace,” Umahi said.
