Germany’s Nmecha explains why he prayed with Curacao players after the match.

Germany forward Felix Nmecha explained why players from Germany and Curacao gathered in a prayer circle on the pitch shortly after Sunday’s World Cup match at Houston Stadium.

Nmecha, who scored in Germany’s 7‑1 victory, described the deeper significance of the post‑match huddle that drew attention from fans in Texas.

Instead of a typical post‑game handshake, Germany’s Jonathan Tah and Nmecha approached their opponents and invited them to join the circle.

When asked why they formed a circle with Curacao players, Nmecha said, “In the game we are opponents, but after the game we are all Christians, we are all brothers.”

He added, “We just did a little prayer together because we are still very grateful. The result is, of course, nice for us, but we all believe that Jesus is glorified through the game. That’s why we came and prayed together.”

The match began with Germany setting a strong tone for their World Cup campaign, while Curacao offered an early fairy‑tale moment. The smallest nation ever to qualify for the tournament briefly held its breath when Livano Comenencia scored a 21st‑minute equaliser to make it 1‑1.

However, the pre‑match favourites proved too powerful. A clinical performance secured the decisive win for Germany, with goals from Felix Nmecha, Nico Schlotterbeck, Kai Havertz, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav.

For the 27‑year‑old Nmecha, integrating his faith into his football career is a regular practice. His Instagram bio reads, “Football is my passion, Jesus is my foundation.”

He has often used his platform to highlight his beliefs, a tradition that began early in his international career. After debuting for the German national team in 2023, he said, “It’s a great honour and a blessing to be called up to the national team for the first time. This is truly a moment I will never forget and I give all the glory to Jesus.”

Fans are also familiar with Nmecha’s signature goal celebration, where he points to himself and then toward heaven. “I want to show that Jesus died for my sins, He washed away my sins,” he told Wolfsburg’s YouTube channel.
