Gen Rabe's death in captivity is a wake‑up call, says Sokoto security adviser

The Special Adviser on Security Matters to Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu, retired Colonel Ahmed Usman, has described the death of former Nigerian Army spokesperson, retired Major General Abubakar Rabe, in kidnappers’ custody as a national tragedy and a reminder of Nigeria’s security challenges.

Usman made the remarks in a statement issued on Sunday following reports that the retired senior military officer died after spending nearly two weeks in captivity. Rabe was abducted alongside his wife while travelling to Katsina State.

Expressing sorrow over the incident, Usman said, “The death of Maj. Gen. Abubakar Rabe is a painful loss to his family, the Nigerian Army and the nation as a whole. He served this country with dedication and honour, and it is heartbreaking that his life ended under such tragic circumstances.”

He noted that the incident underscored the continued threat of banditry and kidnapping in parts of the country.

“His death is a painful reminder of the security challenges confronting our nation. It should serve as a wake‑up call for all stakeholders to intensify efforts towards ending banditry and other violent crimes,” Usman stated.

The security adviser also raised concern over the continued captivity of Rabe’s wife, calling for urgent action to secure her freedom.

“We are deeply worried about the fate of his wife and call on security agencies to deploy every available resource to secure her safe and immediate release,” he said.

Usman urged authorities to strengthen efforts aimed at rescuing people still being held by criminal groups across the country.

“The tragic death of Maj. Gen. Rabe should strengthen our collective resolve to rescue those still in captivity and bring an end to the activities of these criminal elements. No family should be made to endure such pain and uncertainty,” he added.

He further called on security agencies to intensify efforts to track down those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice, while encouraging citizens to support security operations through vigilance and credible intelligence sharing.

Usman also extended his condolences to Rabe’s family, the Nigerian Army, friends and associates, praying for the peaceful repose of the late officer’s soul.
