The Federal Government secured 150 convictions out of 160 terrorism trials on the first day of the mass trial proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Mr Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, the Attorney‑General of the Federation (AGF), announced the figures during a briefing to journalists at the court on Tuesday. The trial involves more than 600 suspects charged with terrorism offences.
“The exercise is still ongoing. It will continue today, tomorrow and on Thursday,” he said. “Yesterday, about 160 trials were conducted. Nearly 150 convictions were secured.”
According to the AGF, roughly 300 cases were handled today, with another 84 expected to be processed. “Wherever the process stops today, it will continue tomorrow and also on Thursday,” he added. “The exercise is still in progress. I appeal for patience as we continue to carry out our lawful duty to the nation.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the trial, which usually takes place at Kainji in Niger, was moved to the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Fagbemi, who also serves as Minister of Justice, said on Monday that the Federal Government was determined to stamp out terrorism and related activities in the country. “We will fight with every inch of our blood to ensure that Nigeria becomes a safe haven for everyone,” he stated.
