Fencing Federation Promises Memorable 2026 Commonwealth Championships

As the first African nation to stage the senior Commonwealth Fencing Championship—after South Africa hosted the junior edition in 2022—the Nigeria Fencing Federation (NFF) has pledged to deliver a memorable event in August this year.

During a press conference at the Rugby School, Eko Atlantic, Lagos, where the competition’s mascot and logo were unveiled, NFF President Adeyinka Samuel said the championship is more than a sporting event; it is a statement of ambition.

“For many years, countries worldwide have used sport not only as a platform for competition but also as a vehicle for education, economic growth, international cooperation, tourism, and national development. The Commonwealth Fencing Championships give Nigeria exactly that opportunity,” she said.

“In August 2026, Lagos will welcome athletes, coaches, officials, and delegates from across the Commonwealth. Many of these visitors will be coming to Nigeria for the first time. They will experience our hospitality, culture, innovation, and determination to compete and collaborate on the global stage,” she added.

“For fencing in Nigeria, this moment marks the culmination of years of hard work. What began as a small, relatively unknown sport has grown into one of the country’s most exciting Olympic disciplines, creating opportunities for children, young people, coaches, officials, and athletes from diverse backgrounds,” the NFF boss continued.

Participant Teniayo Erinle expressed both excitement and concern ahead of the championship. “I believe at the end of the competition I will have gained a lot of experience,” she said.

For Nabel Oseni, a male competitor who has fenced for eight years, the event is a great privilege. “It is a big privilege to represent my country on the global stage,” he said.

Vice President of the NFF, Rachael Samuel, viewed the occasion as a chance to celebrate a significant achievement for Nigerian sport. “The awarding of the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships to Nigeria is a recognition of the progress we have made as a federation and as a nation. It reflects the confidence that the international fencing community has in our ability to host a world‑class event and deliver an unforgettable experience for athletes and visitors from across the Commonwealth,” she said.
