Fatal road crash kills driver in Lagos — LASTMA

A single‑vehicle crash on the Oshodi‑Apapa Expressway in Lagos resulted in the death of a driver. The incident prompted a rapid response from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Nigeria Police Force.

LASTMA reported that the fatal accident occurred early Saturday morning at the Charity Bus Stop, inbound to Iyana Isolo, along the busy Oshodi‑Apapa corridor.

Preliminary findings indicate that the driver of a Honda Pilot SUV lost control of the vehicle. The car reportedly rolled over several times before coming to rest.

Because of the severity of the impact, the driver died instantly and was trapped inside the wreckage.

LASTMA officers who were managing traffic near the Iyana Isolo axis arrived quickly at the scene. Together with police from the Mosafejo Police Division, they recovered the victim’s body from the damaged vehicle while maintaining traffic flow and preventing further incidents on the road.

After the recovery, the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) transported the deceased to a public mortuary in accordance with public‑health protocols.

The damaged Honda Pilot SUV was handed over to Mosafejo Police officers for further investigation.

Investigations are underway to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of the crash.

General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare‑Oki, expressed sorrow over the loss and offered condolences to the deceased’s family. He urged motorists to observe speed limits and traffic regulations, especially during late‑night and early‑morning travel.

“Motorists are strongly urged to eschew reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, excessive speeding and every form of traffic infraction capable of precipitating avoidable tragedies on our roads. The sanctity and preservation of human life must remain paramount in the conduct of every road user. No journey is so urgent as to justify compromising safety,” Bakare‑Oki said.

He emphasized the importance of vigilance and safety for all road users at all times.
