Experts Call for Reinstating Automated Weighbridge Compliance in Road Infrastructure

Logistics experts have urged the reintroduction of automated weighbridge compliance nationwide to safeguard the substantial investment made in the road sector.

They argue that such measures would alleviate the severe pressure currently affecting the country’s road networks, which stems from inadequate enforcement of compliance standards.

The call was made during the 10th anniversary of CityBusinessNews, held in Lagos under the theme “Logistics As The Engine Room Of Nigeria Economy.”

In his keynote address, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), urged the government to reinstate weighbridges across the country.

He added that the industry must focus on developing human capital within a chartered framework, emphasizing the reduction of operational hazards among haulage fleets.

“As a nation we must institutionalize professional safety certifications that push the sector toward automated weighbridge compliance, preventing overloaded trucks from destroying road investments. This directly protects the federal government’s historic N3.23 trillion road infrastructure budget from premature degradation,” he said.

Mr. Frank Nneji, Founder of ABC Transport, stated that the Nigerian government should consider developing pipeline infrastructure to ease the burden on roads.

“The UAE is currently building a pipeline to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, so this is the issue we must start looking at as a country and must continue to provide favourable conditions for the industry,” he said.
