Former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has identified a player he believes the club should target for new head coach Xabi Alonso.
Alonso will officially take over as Chelsea’s manager on July 1, after visiting the club’s training complex in Cobham last week. He is expected to strengthen the squad ahead of the upcoming season.
Di Matteo says the club should consider signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle. He described Tonali as a “class player” and praised his age.
“I think Sandro Tonali is a class player. He is a good age, too,” Di Matteo told Ladbrokes.
“I am not sure whether Chelsea needs another player in that particular department. I suppose it would depend on someone leaving. You know, they have Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Andrey Santos and Romeo Lavia. If one of those were to leave, then maybe.”
“I would love to see him at Chelsea. But, for me, their priorities this summer should be in other areas of the pitch.”
